The Island is a 2011 Bulgarian-Swedish drama directed by Kamen Kalev. It follows Sophie, a Parisian woman, and her partner Daneel as they vacation on a small island off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Sophie pushes Daneel to go to Bulgaria, even though he doesn’t want to. When they arrive, Sophie learns that Daneel was born there. They later visit an abandoned island nearby, and the heat, along with a few strange locals, bring out hidden fears that test their relationship. To get through it, they must face the unknown.

The film was Kalev’s second feature and is a Bulgarian-Swedish production. It premiered at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight on May 16, 2011. Starring Thure Lindhardt and Laetitia Casta, The Island runs 95 minutes and was made with a budget of about €1.5 million. It is spoken in Bulgarian, English, and French.
