Subrata Maitra (physician)
Subrata Maitra (1956–2016) was a doctor from Kolkata who treated several well-known people, including Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Swami Ranganathananda. He studied at Jagabandhu Institution in Ballygunge, earned his MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College, and completed a postgraduate DNB in New Delhi. At 26, he moved to the United Kingdom to obtain MRCP and worked in various medical fields, including critical care, for about eight years before returning to India to join Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata.
Maitra dedicated years to improving West Bengal’s public health system and led an expert health committee formed by the chief minister. He helped establish the Ranganathananda Gramin Swastha Seva Kendra in the Sundarbans’ Sandeshkhali area. A devotee of Belur Math, he distributed medicines, food, and water to Sundarbans villagers after Cyclone Aila in 2009.
In 2015, he received the Banga Bhushan award from the West Bengal government for his work in healthcare. Maitra was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December 2014; he was moved to Belle Vue Clinic in March 2016 and died on 17 March 2016 from multi-organ failure. He was married to Chaitali Mukherjee and had two sons.
