International Sand Sculpture Festival (FIESA) is the world’s largest sand sculpture event. It takes place every year in Pêra, Algarve, Portugal, and has run since 2003. The festival site covers about 15,000 square metres (3.7 acres). Each year about 60 artists use roughly 35,000 tons of sand to create 50 sculptures. The exhibition is also open in the evenings with special lighting. Each year the festival features a different theme.
