Gopi Prasannaa
Gopi Prasannaa is an Indian graphic designer who creates posters for South Indian films. Active since 2010, he is known for bold, graphic posters. His notable works include Aaranya Kaandam (2010) with a graphic-novel style, Kaththi (2014) which introduced first-look posters, 96 (2018), and Master (2021) whose first-look poster went viral. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he made Ninaivugalai Thedi, a 10-part series of nostalgic retro posters inspired by classic Tamil films like Sadma, 16 Vayathinile, Mullum Malarum, Mouna Raagam, and Antha 7 Naatkal.
His first theater poster was Salangai Oli (1983) when he was six, and he enjoyed painting as a child. He admires poster artists Tom Martin and several Japanese artists, and was inspired by hand-drawn Chennai hoardings and Maniyan Selvam’s illustrations in Ananda Vikatan. Before turning to publicity design, he worked as a programmer and tried gaming, advertising and branding. Aaranya Kaandam launched his Tamil cinema career, and Kaththi helped popularize first-look posters. The Master poster released on New Year’s Eve 2021 and went viral. He is the first of three collaborations with director Thiagarajan Kumararaja.
