Dave Roberts (English footballer)
Dave Roberts (born in Tipton, England) was an English football forward who played in the 1920s for clubs in England and Ireland.
He started with Shrewsbury Town in the Birmingham & District League, where he was the club’s top scorer over two seasons. He then joined Walsall in the Third Division North and made his Football League debut in September 1922 as inside right against Chesterfield, a match Walsall lost 6–0. He played only a few league games for Walsall before moving to Ireland.
Roberts joined Bohemians in 1923. He became the League of Ireland’s top scorer in the 1923–24 season, with 20 league goals in 17 appearances, helping Bohemians win their first league title as the team recorded 15 straight league wins. In all competitions that season, he scored 25 goals in 27 games.
In 1925, Roberts was sentenced to one month in prison for deserting his family and failing to pay maintenance. After Bohemians, he played for Fordsons for two seasons (1925–26 and 1926–27), scoring 20 league goals and helping them win the 1925–26 Free State Cup; he opened the scoring in the final as Fordsons beat Shamrock Rovers 3–2.
Roberts also represented the League of Ireland XI, appearing in matches against the Welsh League XI and scoring goals, including two in a 3–3 draw in February 1924.
