Hunt terrier
Hunt terrier refers to types of small dogs kept by British fox-hunting clubs, where riders on horseback chased foxes with packs of hounds. They served several jobs: catching rats around stables and kennels, running with the hounds to flush foxes from hiding spots, digging to reach foxes underground, and sometimes acting as a lurcher. They were often white so hunters could see them, though they could be any color. Today, in places where fox hunting is still legal, such as the United States, these terriers are rarely used. Modern breeds that came from hunt terriers, like the Fox Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier, are now common as pets and show dogs, or as working terriers if small enough.
