Daniel Brent
Daniel Carroll Brent (1770–1841) was an American politician and diplomat. He served briefly as acting United States Secretary of State for three days in March 1825 during the transition when John Quincy Adams became president. Earlier, Brent was the chief clerk of the State Department from 1817 to 1833, serving under Presidents James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. After leaving that job, he became the U.S. Consul in Paris and stayed in that role until his death in 1841. While in Paris, he helped arrange the burial of Eliza Monroe Hay, James Monroe’s daughter, at Père Lachaise Cemetery. He was born in Stafford County, Virginia, and died in Paris, France.
