List of progestogens
Progestogens are steroids used as medicines in humans and animals. They come from two main parent compounds: progesterone and testosterone. Some are active but not used clinically, such as retroprogesterone. 17α-hydroxyprogesterone itself is not active as a progestogen and isn’t used medically.
Derivatives from 17α-hydroxyprogesterone that act as progestogens include gestonorone caproate (gestronol hexanoate), nomegestrol acetate, segesterone acetate (nestorone, elcometrine), and norgestomet.
Other progestogens come from 17α-methylprogesterone; examples include demegestone, promegestone, and trimegestone (these are 19-norprogesterone derivatives).
Testosterone itself has little progestogenic activity, though it is the parent structure of this group. Nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) has progestogenic activity but is classified as an androgenic-anabolic steroid and isn’t used as a progestogen. There is also an active progestin called spirolactone SC-5233, but it isn’t used medically.
