Ryes War Cemetery
Ryes War Cemetery is a Second World War cemetery for Commonwealth soldiers, located near Bazenville, about 8 km east of Bayeux in Normandy, France. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it was established in 1944 after the D-Day landings and designed by Philip D. Hepworth.
The cemetery holds 653 Commonwealth graves, one Polish grave and 335 German graves. Many interred soldiers came from the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division that landed on Gold Beach, along with a large number of Royal Navy and merchant navy sailors. Two brothers, Private Joseph Casson of the Durham Light Infantry and Marine Robert Casson of 45 Commando, lie beside each other. The grave of professional footballer Les Milner is also here. The cemetery sits east of Bayeux, near Bazenville on the D87 road, close to Arromanches.
