Chatain is a rural commune in the Vienne department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in western France. It sits in the southwest corner of the department, about 10 km southwest of Charroux, along the Charente River. The area covers about 22 square kilometers. Elevation ranges from 125 to 193 meters above sea level, with the town hall at about 166 meters. The landscape features bocage (hedged fields) and valleys, with small lakes and spots where aquatic birds can be found.

The population is around 240 people (2023), giving a density of about 11 inhabitants per square kilometer. Chatain is part of the Montmorillon arrondissement and the Civray canton. The mayor for 2020–2026 is Patricia Chaumillon. The INSEE code is 86063 and the postal code is 86250. The time zone is CET (UTC+1) and CEST in summer.
