XBEL stands for XML Bookmark Exchange Language. It is an open XML standard used to share Internet bookmarks (also called favorites). It was created by the Python XML Special Interest Group as a useful project to showcase Python’s XML tools.

Many browsers and tools use XBEL to store bookmarks, for example Galeon, Konqueror, Arora, and Midori. Del.icio.us bookmarks can be stored in XBEL with the XBELicious app. The Floccus synchronization client can save XBEL files on WebDAV servers. The SiteBar bookmark server can import and export bookmarks in XBEL format. In GNOME, applications like Nautilus and gedit use XBEL for bookmarks.
