Catharine, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Serena Township, LaSalle County. It sits along County Route 2, about 2 miles west of Sheridan. The area lies at an elevation of 643 feet and is in the Central Time Zone (UTC-6 standard time, UTC-5 daylight time). Area codes are 815 and 779, and its GNIS feature ID is 405700.
Catharine was formerly known as Burgess Junction, named for a Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad attorney. In 1968, the name was changed to Catharine by the CB&Q railroad at the request of Ellis Waller, who proposed naming it after Catharine (Katie) Bentley during a fundraising railroad excursion on May 23, 1968. A surprise reception was held on a CB&Q private car in Union Station, where Catharine received a metal sign to be placed at the junction.
