Eparchy of Volodymyr–Brest
Eparchy of Volodymyr–Brest
The Eparchy of Volodymyr–Brest, known in Latin as Vladimirensis–Brestensis Ruthenorum, was a church district (an eparchy, or diocese in the Ruthenian Uniate Church) that existed from 1596 to 1795. It was located in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth between the Bug and Styr rivers, in areas that are now part of Ukraine and Belarus. It was a subordinate see (suffragan) of the Metropolis of Kiev, Galicia and all Ruthenia.
History
- Established in 1596.
- After the partitions of Poland, its territory came under Tsarist Russia. In 1795, the eparchy was suppressed and its bishop, Simeon Młocki, had to resign.
- The eparchy was partly revived in 1798 as the Eparchy of Brest, with Josaphat Bulhak appointed as the first eparch of the reestablished see.
- This diocese was suppressed again on May 4, 1828.
