Can the Rhythm

Can the Rhythm is a song by the British female pop duo Girl Talk. It was written by Karen Wright when she was 12 years old.

In 1983, the song was released as Girl Talk’s debut single on Park Records. The group at the time was Karen Wright and Leigh Pearce, aged 12 and 13. Wright sings the first verse, Pearce the second, and both sing on the chorus. The single did not chart. The 1983 cover features Leigh Pearce on the right.

In 1984, Pearce left and Karen’s sister Julie joined. The group signed with Innervision Records and re-released Can the Rhythm as their second single in October 1984. This version was re-recorded with Karen and Julie on vocals and produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman, giving it a hi-NRG dance-pop sound. It remains the best-known version of the song.

The single was issued in three formats: a 7-inch single, a 12-inch single, and a 10-inch shaped picture disc.

Chart performance:
- United Kingdom: reached #92, becoming Girl Talk’s only UK chart entry.
- United States: released by Geffen Records in December 1984, peaking at #26 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in January 1985 and staying on the chart for five weeks.
