British Libyans
British Libyans are people in the United Kingdom who have Libyan ancestry. The estimated total population is about 16,000. They live mainly in Greater Manchester, London, Leicester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Newcastle upon Tyne, Edinburgh, York, Huddersfield, and Preston. They speak Arabic (Libyan Arabic) and British English. Their religions are Sunni Islam and Christianity.
A British Libyan can be a citizen or resident of the UK with Libyan roots. This can include people born in the UK to a Libyan parent, or to a parent of any origin.
According to the 2011 UK Census, there were 14,284 Libyan-born people in England, 762 in Wales, 1,327 in Scotland, and 79 in Northern Ireland.
Manchester has the largest Libyan community in the UK, with estimates from 5,000 to 10,000 Libyans.
There are Arabic-language community schools.
