Albert Don-Chebe
Albert Don-Chebe is a Ghanaian lawyer, a retired soldier, and a public servant who served as the 15th Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) from 2013 to 2016. He studied at St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast and Tamale Senior High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and a master’s degree in English from the University of Manchester. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Affairs from the Defense Information School and is a Barrister-at-Law, called to the Ghana Bar in 2003.
Don-Chebe started his career as an English lecturer at the University of Ghana. He spent about 15 years in the Ghana Armed Forces’ Directorate of Public Relations, rising from Lieutenant to Major and taking part in five UN peacekeeping missions before voluntarily retiring in 1999.
After leaving the military, he became Corporate Affairs Manager at Ghana Breweries Limited. In 2005 he joined the Ministry of Public Sector Reforms as a Communications Consultant, later becoming Head of Corporate Communication and Customer Care at Ghana Telecom (now Vodafone Ghana). In 2009 he joined the Millennium Development Authority as Director of Community and Public Outreach. Before his appointment to the GBC, he was Director of Corporate Planning and Communication at the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF). He has also served as president of the Institute of Public Relations.
On 14 May 2013, the National Media Commission appointed him Director General of the GBC for a three-year term ending 16 May 2016. He went on accumulated leave in February 2016 and did not return amid worker agitation; he was succeeded by Kwame Akuffo Annof-Ntow.
During his time at the GBC, he was elected president of the African Union of Broadcasting and he serves as the chairman of the Northern Development Forum. He is married with children.
