Carola Nitschke
Carola Nitschke, later Beraktschjan, was born on 1 March 1962 in Berlin. She was an East German swimmer who competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Just before the Games, at age 14, she set world records in the 100 m breaststroke and in the 4×100 m medley relay. At Montreal, she swam in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke, finishing fourth and sixth, and she won a gold medal in the 4×100 m medley relay even though she swam only in the preliminary round. In 1977 at the European Aquatics Championships she won gold in the medley relay and silver in the 100 m breaststroke. Later she admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs as part of East Germany’s doping program, returned her medals, and asked to have her name removed from the competition records.
