Borisoglebsky, Yaroslavl Oblast
Borisoglebsky is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Borisoglebsky District in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia. It sits on the Ustye River, about 16 kilometers from Rostov and 77 kilometers southwest of Yaroslavl. The population was 5,646 in 2010 and about 5,405 in 2018.
The main attraction is the Borisoglebsky Monastery, now a museum, named after Saints Boris and Gleb. The monastery was expanded under Ivan the Terrible, who oversaw the building of tall walls and a bell tower around an older cathedral. After Ivan’s death, the only major addition was a carved barbican church in the late 17th century, commissioned by metropolitan Iona Sysoevich. In 2005, statues of monk Peresvet (by Zurab Tsereteli) and of Prince Pozharsky were placed near the monastery walls.
