1900 CAHL season
The 1900 Canadian Amateur Hockey League season was the league’s second season. Five teams played an eight-game schedule from January 6 to March 10, 1900. The Montreal Shamrocks won the league title for the second year in a row, finishing with seven wins and one loss. McGill University tried to join the league but was turned down.
At the league meeting, goal nets were demonstrated by Frank Stocking of the Quebec club and then approved for league play; the nets connected the posts but had no crossbar at the top.
Gloves were common, and shin guards were now mostly worn inside the stockings, though some players still used the old outside style. Star rover Graham Drinkwater retired from the Victorias before the season began. The Shamrocks’ lone loss came after the league championship had already been decided.
Cup challenges followed the league season. Winnipeg Victorias challenged for the Cup in a best-of-three series. Winnipeg won the first game 4–3, but Montreal won the next two games, 3–2 and 5–4, to take the Cup. In March, Halifax Crescents also challenged, but Montreal defeated them easily, 10–2 and 11–0.
Top scorer: Harry Trihey with 17 goals.
The Montreal Shamrocks continued their success into the next season.
