Afrella

Afrella, also known as Arilda, was a Welsh saint from the early 6th century. She was the daughter of a high‑ranking official at the royal court of Gwent; some think her father was Vortimer, son of Vortigern and Severa Verch Maxen. Afrella married Umbrafel. When Samson of Dol urged his parents to become monks, Afrella and Umbrafel chose to do the same. Afrella had children, including Saint Maglorius and Henwg; another child’s name is unknown. She is said to have founded a monastery. Some scholars have suggested she might be the same person as Saint Arilda of Oldbury‑on‑Severn and Oldbury‑on‑the‑Hill in Gloucestershire, but this identification is not certain.
