Apple keyboards

Apple makes many external keyboards for its computers, from the Apple II to Mac and iPad. The current main options are the Magic Keyboard and the Smart Keyboard family for iPad.

Magic Keyboard: This is Apple’s main external keyboard for Macs. It can connect by Bluetooth or with a USB connection. It uses a modern scissor‑switch key design, has backlit keys, and comes in versions with a numeric keypad or Touch ID. For iPad, a Magic Keyboard can attach magnetically and draws power from the iPad via the Smart Connector, while also offering a USB‑C pass‑through for charging. Later versions added a larger trackpad and more precise cursor control, with revisions for different iPad sizes. A newer variant for iPad Pro (M4) debuted in 2024, bringing a bigger, haptic trackpad; an iPad Air version followed in 2025 with fewer features.

Smart Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio: These are lightweight keyboard covers for iPad. They use the iPad’s Smart Connector for power (no separate battery) and do not require charging. The original Smart Keyboard used a fabric cover and a simple key feel; the Smart Keyboard Folio added two viewing angles and extra protection, and works with newer iPad Pro and iPad Air models.

Historical note: Apple has released many desktop keyboards over the years for the Macintosh line, including models that used older connectors and layouts. Over time Apple moved from specialized connections to USB and Bluetooth, and the keyboard designs have shifted from very thin (butterfly) to more reliable scissor mechanisms. Apple keyboard layouts also differ from the common IBM PC layout, with unique modifier keys and symbols.
