1982 French cantonal elections were held on 14 and 21 March to elect cantonal general councilors. The left, in power since 1981, lost ground to the right, which held 59 of the 95 cantonal presidencies. The Socialists lost 10 seats, while the Communists lost 45. The elections use the same two-round system as regional or legislative elections, with a 10% threshold of registered voters needed to reach the second round.
