On 30 March 1893, a by-election was held for the Murrumbidgee electorate in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly after Premier Sir George Dibbs resigned because he was insolvent. Dibbs, a Protectionist, had been bankrupt twice before—ten and fifteen years earlier—and said the bankruptcies were caused by the falling value of his freehold land and mining properties.
