South African International Stamp Exhibition, 1928

The exhibition brought together stamp collectors from many countries. The main prize, the Championship Cup, was won by E. J. Lee of England for Uruguay. Special Silver Cups (with gold medals) went to J. E. M. Coch of Johannesburg for Rhodesia and A. Watson of Pretoria for Great Britain. Special Medals were awarded to Dr. McCann of Liverpool for the Irish Free State and W. L. Ashmead of Cape Town for Jamaica.
Gold Medals were given to several collectors for different stamps, including L. Simenhoff of Cape Town for the Union of South Africa; H. Mallett-Veale of Prieska for South West Africa; A. F. Lichtenstein of New York for the Cape of Good Hope; H. H. Hurst of Durban for Natal; H. B. Hargreaves of London for Rhodesia; F. Hugh Vallancey of London for Great Britain; E. A. Smythies for India (½ Anna). Additional Gold Medals went to H. Lagerhof (three medals), G. Ginger (two medals), and nine other winners.
There were also 26 Silver and 22 Oxidised Silver medals awarded. In the literature category, the top prizes went to Charles Nissen for The Plating of the Penny Black Postage Stamp of Great Britain, 1840, and to E. A. Smythies for The Half-Anna Lithographed Stamps of India, 1854–1855.
