181 West Madison Street
181 West Madison Street, also known as Paine Webber Tower, is a Chicago office skyscraper. It stands 680 feet (210 m) tall with 50 floors and about 1.12 million square feet of space. Construction began in 1988 and it opened in 1990. The building was designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates for Miglin-Beitler Developments and is managed and leased by MB Real Estate. A distinctive feature is its recessed crown, with white lighting at the top corners and colors for holidays. This is Cesar Pelli’s first and only completed tower in Chicago. In 1989, the same developers and architect planned a much taller nearby project called the Miglin-Beitler Skyneedle—2,000 feet tall with 125 stories—but the plan was canceled due to a weak real estate market.
