Zhenyuan County, Guizhou

Zhenyuan County is in eastern Guizhou province, inside the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. The county seat is Wuyang. It covers 1,878 square kilometers and had about 203,000 residents in 2010. The area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, an average temperature around 16.5°C, and about 1,090 millimeters of rain per year. The Wuyang River flows through the county.

Most people speak Mandarin, with many local residents also using Southwestern Mandarin and Miao languages. The area was traditionally home to the Dong and Miao peoples. The population includes several ethnic groups, and the local government supports all religions.

Economy and land use: Agriculture is important, especially rice and vegetables, and forestry is significant. Tourism is growing, focusing on history and wine. In 2019, Zhenyuan’s GDP was about 5.86 billion yuan.

History and government: Zhenyuan has a long history. It developed as a border defense and military area during ancient times and went through several changes in government structure until becoming a county. Today it has eight towns, three townships, and one ethnic township.

Landmarks and culture: The county has several notable sites, including the Qinglongdong Ancient Architectural Complex, the Site of Heping Village, and the Zhenyuan Ancient Wall. Religious sites include Zhongyuan Chan Temple, Mazu Temple, and Wanshou Palace. Mount Shiping is a popular nearby attraction.

Transport: Zhenyuan is served by two railways, the Xiang–Qian line and the Zhuzhou–Liupanshui line, with Zhenyuan railway station. Major roads include the G60 Shanghai–Kunming Expressway, G320, and G211, plus local highways S306, S25, and S84.
