Yogyakarta railway station
Yogyakarta Station, commonly known as Tugu Station, is the main railway station in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It sits in the city center near Malioboro Street and is about 113 meters above sea level. The station is owned and run by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and serves intercity trains, KAI Commuter services, and the YIA Airport Rail Link.
The station has seven platforms and nine tracks. It offers parking, bicycle facilities, and accessibility for passengers with disabilities. It connects with Trans Jogja buses at nearby stops, including Malioboro 1 and lines 1A, 2A, 3A, and 8.
Yogyakarta Station opened on 20 July 1887 during the Dutch era. It was built by two railway companies and once used different gauges. Over the years some routes were discontinued, such as lines to Magelang and Palbapang. The station area includes two yards (north and south) and two gates: the east gate for intercity departures and the south gate for the YIA Rail Link and other trains.
In recent years the station has been renovated to modern standards. A high platform was added, and in 2021 a new signaling system from Len Industri was activated. A double track between Yogyakarta and Lempuyangan was completed to improve service.
Nearby there is a locomotive depot and two displayed engines: a portable steam engine and a hydraulic diesel locomotive on display since 2018. A Kewek Bridge crosses the Code River near the east side. The station features a large sign in Javanese script reading “Yogyakarta Station,” and it has a train arrival jingle based on the kroncong song Sepasang Mata Bola.
Yogyakarta Station remains the city’s main rail hub, with Lempuyangan Station also serving as another important rail venue in the area.
