Downtown Albuquerque
Downtown Albuquerque is the city’s central business and government area. It’s bordered by Marble Avenue to the north, Coal Avenue to the south, Seventh and Tenth Streets to the west, and the railroad tracks to the east (where East Downtown, or EDo, sits).
The district uses a simple grid. Central Avenue is the main east–west street, and Second Street is now the main north–south street. Fourth Street used to be the main north–south corridor, but a section near Civic Plaza is now a vehicle road again after a pedestrian mall was turned back in 2014.
Six official districts make up Downtown:
- Courthouse District (north side, near Fourth and Lomas): named for the three major courthouses there.
- Warehouse District (north side along the railroad tracks): historic warehouses from the railroad era.
- Plaza District (central Downtown around Civic Plaza): home to many tall buildings, government offices, shops, dining, and nightlife; includes the City-County Building, Convention Center, Albuquerque Plaza, and the Main Library.
- Gold District (along Gold Avenue): contains some government offices and historic buildings; Amy Biehl High School is here.
- Casa District (southern area): mostly residential with lofts; Alvarado Square is located here.
- East Downtown (EDo): the area on the east side of the tracks.
Downtown houses most of the city’s tall buildings and several notable landmarks, such as the KiMo Theater and other historic office buildings.
Transit is a major focus here. Downtown is the city’s transit hub, with ABQ RIDE buses, the Red and Blue ART BRT routes, and the ARTx route, many stopping at the Alvarado Transportation Center. The Downtown Get Around shuttle was replaced in 2018 by local routes. The Alvarado Transportation Center also serves Amtrak and Greyhound, and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express has a station there, running a 96.5-mile corridor with 13 stations.
Nearby but outside the city limits are attractions like Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, Kirtland Air Force Base, and the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History; Rio Grande High School and the Sandia Peak Tramway are close by as well.
