Korg MS-20
The Korg MS-20 is a classic monophonic analog synthesizer first sold from 1978 to 1983. It’s famous for being patchable: you can reroute audio and modulation signals with an onboard patch panel, letting you craft unusual sounds and even process external signals.
What makes it special
- Two oscillators per voice with a variety of waveforms and a ring mod option.
- Two filters in series: a high‑pass and a low‑pass, giving the MS‑20 its distinctive, punchy character.
- Two envelopes, a low‑frequency oscillator (LFO) for modulation, and two VCA sections.
- A noise source and extensive patching options for Creative routing and external control via CV/Gate. Modern versions add MIDI and USB connectivity.
Reissues and variants
- MS‑20 Mini (2013): a smaller, 86% sized version with 1/8" audio I/O and added MIDI/USB.
- MS‑20 Kit (2014): a full‑size, unassembled desktop version with two filter types and MIDI/USB.
- MS‑20M Kit (2015): a desktop module paired with the SQ‑1 sequencer, featuring VCO sync/FM, PWM, multiple CV/GATE standards, MIDI/USB, and a patch bay.
- MS‑20 FS (2020): a full‑size reissue retaining the Rev1/Rev2 filter options and MIDI via DIN and USB.
Behringer released a lower‑cost clone, the K‑2, in 2019. Software versions of the MS‑20 live on in Korg’s Legacy Collection (as a virtual instrument), and there are additional emulations and mobile apps inspired by the original.
Overall, the MS‑20 is loved for its bold, rich analog sound and hands‑on patching that invites immediate experimentation.
