Nightmares for Sale
Nightmares for Sale is a two-volume horror manga by Kaoru Ohashi. It follows Shadow and Maria, a pair who run a pawnshop selling strange trinkets. These items can grant a customer’s wildest dreams, but reaching those dreams comes at a price, often costing them something important.
In Japan, the series was published by Asahi Sonorama in January and February 2002. An English edition was licensed by Aurora Publishing, with Volume 1 released in 2007 and Volume 2 in 2008.
The English version received mixed reviews. Some critics enjoyed the stories as bite-sized horror, while others criticized the writing and artwork. Mania.com gave both volumes B grades, calling it a solid horror read for fans of darker themes. ComicM!x’s Andrew Wheeler described it as old-fashioned horror with enigmatic characters. Others, like Comics Worth Reading’s Johanna Draper and PopCultureShock’s Katherine Dacey, were more negative about its execution and style. Deb Aoki noted it as a notable creepy graphic novel on a list of similar works.
