War-time electoral pact

War-time electoral pact: An agreement among UK coalition parties during the World Wars. In by-elections, only the party that previously held the seat would nominate a candidate, and other coalition parties would not run. This led to many unopposed by-elections and sometimes strong showings by third-party candidates. The 1914–18 truce effectively ended in June 1918 when Labour said the truce would not be recognised, although Labour did not field candidates in the 1918 General Election. The pact was later used again in World War II.
