Vatican Information Service (VIS) is the official, free news service of the Holy See Press Office. It began in 1991 in Vatican City during Pope John Paul II’s papacy and sends daily news at 3 p.m. Rome time, except in August and on Vatican City public holidays. It offers updates in English, Spanish, French and Italian. VIS is freely available, and anyone can subscribe to its email updates. Each bulletin covers papal activities—meetings, appointments, publications and audiences—and sometimes announcements of the deaths of church leaders and the work of Vatican bodies such as congregations, councils and synods. In 2015, Pope Francis established the Secretariat for Communications in the Roman Curia, and VIS was expected to be incorporated into it.
