Paris Métro Line 16: a quick, easy guide

Line 16 is one of the Grand Paris Express lines, a big project to expand the Paris metro. When finished, it will be fully underground and automated, serving the northern and eastern suburbs in the Seine-Saint-Denis area.

Status and opening
- The line is under construction and will open in two phases: the first part in mid-2027 (Saint-Denis–Pleyel to Clichy–Montfermeil) and the full line in 2028 (to Noisy–Champs).
- The Saint-Denis–Pleyel station opened on June 24, 2024, to serve the 2024 Olympic Games.

Route and length
- Line 16 runs about 27.5 kilometers with 10 stations.
- A maintenance depot is shared with Line 17.
- Three stations are shared with Line 17, including the western end at Saint-Denis–Pleyel.
- Eight of the ten stations connect with other parts of the Paris network (four metro lines, four RER lines) and two tram lines.

Operations and trains
- The line will be fully automated. Keolis will operate the trains, while the railway infrastructure is run by RATP.
- Alstom is supplying the trains: 183 trains were planned for the Grand Paris Express, with a 2019 order for 23 three-car trains to be shared with Line 17 to lower costs.
- The system uses standard gauge tracks (1,435 mm) and overhead electrical power at 1,500 V DC.

History and development
- The project began as the eastern part of the Grand Paris Express red line in 2009 and was renamed Line 16 in 2013.
- Initial plans aimed for construction to start in 2017 and completion by 2023, but the schedule has been pushed back several times.
- Public utility status was declared in December 2015, with preparatory work starting in 2016 and major civil work from 2018 onward.
- The Saint-Denis–Pleyel station’s 2024 opening supported the Olympic activities, with the remaining sections planned for 2026 and 2028.
