Ursuline Academy is a private Catholic school for girls in Dedham, Massachusetts. Located on a 28-acre campus at 85 Lowder Street, it serves students in grades 7–12 and has about 400 students. The school is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston and is sponsored by the Ursuline Educational Foundation, a lay-led organization. The motto is Serviam, meaning “I will serve.”
History and sponsorship: The Ursuline Sisters opened the first Ursuline Academy in the Boston area in 1819 in Charlestown. After riots and relocation, a new school opened in the 1940s, and the campus moved to Dedham in 1957. Academics and student life: Ursuline offers more than 20 clubs and 15 varsity sports. The school’s teams are called the Bears, and the colors are dark green and white.
Athletics: Ursuline competes in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in Division III or IV, depending on the sport. Sports are offered at Junior High, JV, and Varsity levels. Fall sports include cross country, field hockey, soccer, swimming and diving, and volleyball. Winter sports include basketball, downhill skiing, ice hockey, and indoor track. Spring sports include golf, lacrosse, sailing, softball, tennis, and track and field. The Boston Globe has praised Ursuline athletes for maintaining strong GPAs and excelling in their activities.
