Shadow of the Raven
Shadow of the Raven is the eighth studio album by the gothic duo Nox Arcana, released August 20, 2007. The music blends Gothic, dark ambient, and neoclassical styles, performed mainly with piano, violin, pipe organ, harpsichord, and music box melodies. Subtle sound effects and a brief spoken intro accompany the tracks.
Composers Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski honor Edgar Allan Poe, drawing inspiration from Poe’s tales such as The Masque of the Red Death, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, and his poem The Raven.
Some tracks from Shadow of the Raven have been used in stage adaptations of Poe’s works, including The Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado, performed in the United States and Canada. The Pit and the Pendulum was performed in period costume by a 14-piece orchestra.
The album was used as background music for From Out That Shadow: The Life and Legacy of Edgar Allan Poe, a museum exhibition commemorating Poe’s birth bicentennial at the Harry Ransom Center and the University of Virginia.
Credits: Music by Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski. Shadow of the Raven sits in Nox Arcana’s discography after Blood of the Dragon (2006) and before Grimm Tales (2008).
