Lexico was a free online dictionary site that offered English and Spanish dictionaries. The content came from Oxford University Press (OUP) and the site was run by Dictionary.com. It launched in June 2019 as a successor to Oxford Dictionaries Online (also known as Oxford Living Dictionaries), bringing OUP’s dictionary content to a new platform. Lexico used the Oxford Dictionaries API to provide modern, current meanings for free, while the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) remained a separate subscription service focused on historical records.

Lexico drew from: Oxford Dictionary of English, New Oxford American Dictionary, Oxford Thesaurus of English, Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus, plus Spanish dictionaries.

In March 2020, the remaining Oxford Living Dictionaries sites were closed as OUP shifted to providing data to third parties. On 26 August 2022 Lexico was closed and redirected to Dictionary.com; Oxford Dictionaries Premium remained available.

Notes: Lexico’s content was authored by OUP staff. The OED covers long historical development of English, while Lexico focused on current usage.
