Brampton Bierlow is a village and civil parish in South Yorkshire, England, near Barnsley and Rotherham. It sits on the south side of the Dearne Valley, between Barnsley and Rotherham. The name comes from Old English and Old Norse words meaning “settlement growing with broom” and “a village community.” The parish had a population of 3,658 in 2001 and 4,610 in 2011. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it has been in the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough since 1974. Brampton Bierlow was a mining village, with coal employment booming in the past; however, when mines closed in the 1980s, the local economy declined. Since then there has been some recovery thanks to investment in infrastructure and the growth of light industry and services. Notable people include Steve Rothery, guitarist of Marillion, who was born here, and footballers George Robledo and Ted Robledo, who grew up in Brampton after moving here as children; George later represented Chile in the 1950 World Cup.
