Tower of San Niccolò

The Tower of San Niccolò is a historic gate-tower that was part of Florence’s old defensive walls. Today it stands alone in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi in the Oltrarno district of Florence, Tuscany, Italy. The gate and tower were built in 1324, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. The tower is about 115 feet tall and has 160 steps to reach the top, where you can enjoy wide views of the city. Most of Florence’s surrounding walls were demolished in the 19th century during urban renewal led by Giuseppe Poggi, but the Tower of San Niccolò was spared for its vantage point over the city.
