Glasair Aviation
Glasair Aviation USA, LLC is a Chinese-owned aircraft maker based in Arlington, Washington. It builds Glasair and Sportsman 2+2 homebuilt airplanes, and has delivered more than 3,000 Glasair kits worldwide.
The company has its roots with Tom Hamilton, who began flight testing the Glasair TD and started Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft in 1979. Glasair Aviation formed in 2001 when Thomas W. Wathen bought the Glasair assets from the bankrupt Stoddard-Hamilton and reached an agreement with Arlington Aircraft Development to acquire all rights to the GlaStar model. In July 2012, the company was sold to the Jilin Hanxing Group, which created Glasair Aircraft USA, LLC.
The new owners planned to certify the GlaStar design and keep production in Arlington, aiming to make trainers for flight schools and eventually personal aircraft for the Chinese market. Randy Lervold became CEO on May 14, 2019.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company laid off many staff from production and builder-assist programs, leaving about ten employees for product support and engineering. It planned to take orders in 2021, and its website notes that it is accepting limited orders with potential fulfillment in 2023.
