Season 1 of The Secret Life of Us aired on Network Ten in Australia from July 16 to November 26, 2001, and had 22 episodes. After a successful telemovie, Ten took a multimillion-dollar gamble and turned it into a series, even choosing a 9:30 pm timeslot to avoid censorship issues. A Herald Sun critic praised it as a quality, honest drama about young adults, not just risqué content.
The show follows a group of friends in their mid-twenties who live in a St Kilda apartment building. They’re all chasing love, sex, romance, and success, but they’re still figuring out how to get them. The series looks at home life, love life, and work life, with friendship as the core.
Key characters include: Alex Christensen, an ambitious but insecure doctor; Evan Wylde, a would-be writer needing motivation; Kelly Lewis, a lively real estate agent who quits after an affair with her boss; Miranda Lang, who wants stardom and shares a flat with her actor boyfriend Richie Blake; Will McGill, the no-nonsense flatmate; Simon Trader, a wise bartender; and Jason Kennedy and Gabrielle Kovitch, who are about to marry for the wrong reasons and may realize their mistake.
