The Screech Owls
The Screech Owls is a series of kids’ hockey novels by Canadian author Roy MacGregor. There are 27 books published by McClelland & Stewart. The stories follow a fictional hockey team and blend real places and events, such as the Quebec Pee-Wee Tournament and the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
There isn’t a single timeline for the series. The players don’t noticeably age, and the hockey season seems endless, with books sometimes referencing earlier events. Each book is told from the perspective of team captain Travis Lindsay and mixes light hockey action with mystery and danger. The preteens often face unusual threats, including terrorists, murderers, kidnappers, ghosts, and other odd happenings around games and tournaments.
The Screech Owls has won the Our Choice Award and the Manitoba Young Reader’s Choice Award. It has also been shortlisted for several awards, including the Arthur Ellis Award.
A TV adaptation, Screech Owls, aired on YTV from September 1, 2000, to February 1, 2002. It was nominated for Best Children’s or Youth Series or Program at the 2001 Gemini Awards, and actor Jonathan Malen received a Young Artist Award nomination. In the United States, the show aired on Discovery Kids alongside other YTV imports.
