The Punisher (1991 NES game) is a rail shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was developed by Beam Software and published by LJN. The game stars Marvel’s Punisher, with his backstory reworked into a former detective rather than a Vietnam War Marine.

Gameplay is from an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. Players guide the Punisher through New York City locations, shooting criminals and battling bosses: Hitman, Jigsaw, Colonel Kliegg, Sijo Kanaka, and Assassin. The final boss is Kingpin. Power-ups appear after shooting them and include extra ammunition, a med kit, Kevlar, a bazooka, a machine gun, and grenades.

Controls are straightforward: use the D-pad to aim, press A to shoot, and B to throw grenades. When not firing, the Punisher automatically moves left and right to dodge enemy fire, adding depth beyond a simple light-gun setup.

Release and platform: NA release was January 1991 on the NES, and the game is single-player.

Reception and notes: Critics praised the graphics, action, and the unique movement adds to the shooter experience, but criticized the lack of music and certain frustrating design choices, such as the Kingpin boss fight and the Punisher being locked to the bottom of the screen. Some reviews found the aiming and crosshair mechanics awkward with the D-pad and wished for a light-gun accessory like the NES Zapper.

Legacy: In 1991 the game was ported to Game Boy as The Punisher: The Ultimate Payback, which included Spider-Man.
