C3H7O7P has a molar mass of about 186.06 g/mol (exact mass 185.9929 u). It most commonly refers to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P), a small sugar molecule with a phosphate group attached. G3P is a phosphorylated form of glyceraldehyde and is a key intermediate in metabolism, appearing in glycolysis in animals and in the Calvin cycle in plants. It exists in two mirror-image forms (D- and L-), but in biology the D form is the one usually used. The molecule is highly water-soluble because of its multiple hydroxyl groups and the phosphate. While other compounds with the same formula can exist, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate is the best-known example.
