Tchalé Figueira
Tchalé Figueira (born 1953) is a Cape Verdean artist from Mindelo on São Vicente. After traveling widely, including a time in the Netherlands as a dockworker, he moved to Basel, Switzerland, where he studied at the School of Artistic Design from 1974 to 1985. He then returned to São Vicente and set up a studio near the Mindelo port in his family’s old house. Besides painting, he writes poems and sings with a music group. His art often includes social commentary, such as a work that criticizes Cape Verde’s macho culture. Since 1985 he has shown his work in many exhibitions in Lucerne, Basel, Paris, Lisbon, Zurich, Angola, Senegal, the United States, and Cape Verde. He has a brother, Manuel Figueira, who is also an artist.
