Spring Lake School District

Spring Lake School District serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in Spring Lake, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The district has one school, H. W. Mountz School, with about 141–142 students and 22.5 teachers (full-time equivalent), for a student-teacher ratio of about 6 to 1.

For high school, students attend Manasquan High School through a sending/receiving relationship with the Manasquan Public Schools. Manasquan High School also serves students from Avon-by-the-Sea, Belmar, Brielle, Lake Como, Sea Girt, and Spring Lake Heights.

Families may also choose magnet options in Monmouth County’s vocational district, including: Marine Academy of Science and Technology; Academy of Allied Health & Science; High Technology High School; Biotechnology High School; and Communications High School.

History and context: The first public school in Spring Lake opened in 1897. The local school on Tuttle Avenue was renamed H. W. Mountz School in 1962 to honor the retiring principal. In 2015, H. W. Mountz School was named a National Blue Ribbon School for exemplary high performance. In 2016–17, Spring Lake had one of the smallest enrollments in the state.

District classification and governance: The district is in District Factor Group I, indicating relatively high socioeconomic status. It is a Type II district with a five-member board of education elected to three-year terms in November. The board hires a superintendent to run the district and a business administrator to manage finances.
