Archery at the 1904 Summer Olympics – Women's double Columbia round
The women’s double Columbia round was an archery event at the 1904 Summer Olympics, held at Francis Field on September 19. Six American women competed, and Matilda Howell won the gold medal, Emma Cooke took silver, and Jessie Pollock earned bronze. The same top three finished in the next day’s double National round. This was the event’s only Olympic appearance.
How the round worked: A Columbia round involved shooting 12 arrows at each of three distances—50, 40, and 30 yards, for a total of 72 arrows in the double round. Up to 10 bonus points were awarded for various achievements, including best scores and most hits at each distance, and for the highest overall score and most targets hit. Ties were broken first by total score, then by total targets hit.
Howell dominated the competition and finished far ahead of the others. She earned most of the possible bonus points, totaling 9.5 of 10. Cooke received the remaining 0.5 point for tying Howell for the most hits at 30 yards, earning silver. Pollock did not receive any bonus points, earning bronze.
