Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1955 film)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a 1955 West German movie directed by Erich Kobler. It is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Snow White.
Plot in simple terms:
A beautiful queen dies after Snow White is born. The king remarries a vain queen who has a magic mirror that says Snow White is the fairest of them all. Jealous, the queen orders a hunter to kill Snow White, but he lets her go. Snow White finds a tiny cottage where seven dwarfs live and stays with them, helping out.
The queen learns Snow White is alive and tries to get rid of her again. She first disguises herself as a lace seller and tries to suffocate Snow White with a tight lace. When that fails, she returns as a comb seller and uses a poisoned comb. The dwarfs rescue Snow White each time. Finally, the queen uses a poisoned apple. Snow White falls into a deathlike sleep and the dwarfs place her in a glass coffin.
A hunter and a prince soon discover Snow White. The coffin is carried to the prince’s palace, but a dwarf trips and a piece of the apple is dislodged, reviving Snow White. Snow White and the prince marry, and the jealous queen dies in a thunderstorm and lightning.
Production notes:
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria was used as a filming location. The seven dwarfs were played by children from a local dance group. The film runs about 76 minutes and is in German. It premiered in West Germany in 1955. A US English-dubbed version was released later on home video.
