Skjalm Hvide (born before 1045, died around 1113) was a powerful Danish nobleman who ruled Zealand (Sjælland) as an earl in the late Viking Age and early 12th century. He founded the notable Hvide clan (Hvide means “the white”) and became one of Denmark’s most influential leaders of his time.

Key moments in his life
- Battle of Niså (1062): Skjalm fought alongside King Sweyn II of Denmark against the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada. Skjalm was captured but escaped. Harald gave up his claim to Denmark in 1064 after Sweyn’s victory and Sweyn’s recognition of Harald’s rival claims.
- Christianity and culture: Skjalm was among the early Nordic leaders to embrace Christianity. He founded the Jørlunde Church on Zealand around 1085, one of Denmark’s oldest churches, famous for its mid-12th-century frescoes.
- Guardian of Canute Lavard: After Canute Lavard’s parents died on a pilgrimage in 1103, Skjalm and his family took responsibility for raising Canute Lavard, who would become an important Danish prince and later a saint.

Family and descendants
- Skjalm’s son Ebbe Skjalmsen Hvide and his other son Asser Rig (both part of the Hvide family) continued his influence. Asser’s son Absalon became a towering figure—a bishop of Roskilde, then Archbishop of Lund, and a key adviser and warrior for Danish kings.
- Absalon and his cousins helped shape Denmark’s future. They founded Sorø Abbey in 1140 on land owned by Skjalm’s descendants, and the Sorø Abbey Church (built 1161–1201) became a major burial site for Danish royalty.

Legacy
- Sorø Abbey grew into Denmark’s wealthiest monastic house, with lands across the country and a lasting influence on Danish religion and politics.
- The Hvide family also helped lay the groundwork for Copenhagen’s development. Absalon founded Copenhagen in the 1160s, and the area around Sorø remained a center of power for the family for generations.
- The monastery at Sorø later became the site of Sorø Academy, continuing the family’s tradition of learning and leadership.
