Crewe Stadium
Crewe Stadium was a sports venue in Crewe, Cheshire, England, just north of Crewe railway station. It opened in 1898 and closed in 1993. It was also known as Earle Street, LMR Sports Ground, and BR Sports Ground. The site is now a retail park.
The stadium had a cycling and athletics track around a cricket ground used by Crewe Alexandra cricket club from 1898, later by Crewe LMR Cricket Club until 1975. A motorcycle speedway track operated there in the late 1920s/early 1930s at the LMR Sports Ground.
In 1969, Maurice Littlechild formed a speedway team, the Crewe Kings, which raced there from 1969 to 1975 but closed due to money problems. The main track was a 434-metre banked shale oval built on the old athletics ground and was shortened to 397 metres in 1970–71.
From 1981, BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars raced at the stadium, and from 1982 BriSCA F1 Stock Cars, promoted by Jim Barrie, also raced there. The 1993 F2 World Final was held at Crewe Stadium, the biggest oval track the F2s raced on. Other events included V8 Hotstox, National Hot Rods, Banger racing, Ministox, and Rebels. The last meeting was on 11 December 1993.
On 17 September 2010 a plaque commemorating the speedway team and stadium was unveiled at the Kings Arms on Earle Street. Today the site is a retail park.
