John Anderson (6 June 1789 – 24 December 1832) was a Scottish surgeon and genealogist from Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He was born at Gilmerton House, Midlothian, and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. While taking the college exams, he was appointed by the Duke of Hamilton (then Marquis of Douglas) as first surgeon to the Lanarkshire Militia and later as the Duke’s medical adviser, positions he held until his death. Anderson was modest, sociable, and benevolent. He died of inflammation of the brain on 24 December 1832. His major work, Historical and Genealogical Memoirs of the House of Hamilton, was published in Edinburgh in 1825, with a supplement in 1827. For 29 years before his death, he worked on a Statistical History of Lanarkshire and on a Genealogical History of the Robertsons of Struan, but neither was printed.
